It is unacceptable to force people to learn a language that is not native to them, said Russian President Vladimir Putin, in reference to the multi-ethnic Russian regions.

"The same is true for reducing the level and time of teaching the Russian language, to those who are of Russian origin."

"I'd like for heads of the regions of the Russian Federation to pay special attention to this", - Putin said at a meeting of the Council for Inter-ethnic Relations.

There are over 100 minority languages spoken in Russia today, the most popular of which is Tatar, spoken by around 3% of the country's population. Other minority languages include Ukrainian, Chuvash, Bashir, Mordvin, Circassian and Chechen. No language is forbidden from being taught in Russia, especially if it is native to that region; equally, the Russian language must not be marginalised as the official State language.
