Weird Polish law stirs angry mob

Thousand of protesters rallied in the Polish capital of Warsaw over the weekend as Parliament passed a strange law that essentially put the Supreme Court under government control.

Critics had slammed the bill's passage as a blatant power grab by President Andrzej Duda and his right-wing Law and Justice Party,, but the party insists it is simply carrying out needed judicial reform.

Key to the legislation is that current Supreme Court judges would be forced into early retirement and new judges would be appointed by the Justice Ministry.

Let’s recap – a country with a democratic parliament usually relies on the separation of powers doctrine – the legislature, the executive and the judiciary, all of which are intended to work a system of checks and balances on one another.

Where the government in power is able to pick and choose their own judges, that kind of undermines a whole lot of very basic concepts, especially for a country that’s a part of the EU.

Today the Polish president has vetoed the bill, a reminder that it was his own party that put it forward, leaving the rest of the world to wonder what that was all about.
