Lavrov: No visible difference between NATO forces in constant rotation and permanent positioning of NATO forces

KRASNODAR, June 28 - RIA Novosti. NATO has repeatedly increased its military presence in those parts of Europe where there was an agreement not to, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a news conference.

"Your question is about the need for restraint in the issues of arms buildup between NATO and Russia: there are statistics, at least,  and no one has denied it, we have presented it more than once that NATO has repeatedly increased its presence in those parts of Europe where it was agreed not to build up the armed forces on a permanent basis. NATO says that this is being done on the basis of rotation, constant ongoing rotation. Therefore, there is no difference between permanent deployment and the rotational deployment in the current NATO plans. We don't see it, "- said the Minister.

He also noted that the number of NATO exercises has increased many times, while the rationale for these exercises is of the nature of deterring the Russian Federation.

Lavrov noted that Russia had long suggested that the military experts of the Russian Federation and NATO "sit down at the table, lay out the relevant maps and simply inventory what forces and means NATO has on the Russia's border, and what forces and means Russia has on the border with NATO," but the alliance walks away from such a discussion.

"The fact that our North Atlantic colleagues are withdrawing from this conversation, moving away from this very simple proposal, suggests that they perfectly understand what a real balance of forces and resources exists in Europe," the Russian minister added.
