Russian special services have adopted a high-tech system for facial recognition, which has been rolled out across several law enforcement agencies.

The work for the development and implementation of the technology has taken several years.

"Imagine, we have only an image, there are no DNA traces, except for photos - there is nothing else. This program will allow us to quickly understand who this individual is" - says a retired lieutenant colonel of the FSB, and vice-president of the international anti-terrorist association "Alpha", Alexey Filatov.

The technology is able to determine the identity of people in real time, for example, as soon as the image is captured on a security camera.

Similar technology has already proved its effectiveness elsewhere. Users of social networks, with the help a Russian program by Ntechlab, in April of this year established the identity of the two young men who set fire to an apartment building, using only a dim photograph.

The original article does not state the method by which the database of faces is accumulated. However, Russia has been issuing biometric passports since 2010, whereby biometric features are easily recognised by electronic border control systems.
