Lithuania builds wall with Russia - Lavrov unimpressed

On June 5, Lithuania began the construction of a fence on the border with the Kaliningrad region of Russia.

The fence will cost Baltic country 1, 225,000 euros. The fence will be completed in December 2017.

Sergei Lavrov has stated that despite the anti-Russian actions of the leadership of Poland and Lithuania, local authorities in Kaliningrad see direct interest in its people being able to continue to communicate with one another, rather than build walls. Necessity for this is not well understood, outside of the NATO-style scaremongering in Baltic states.

An agreement between the Russian and Polish governments on visa-free local border traffic (VFT) was in place since July 2012. It concerned the whole of the Kaliningrad region and parts of the territories of Warmia, Mazury and Pomerania in Poland. To cross the border for citizens of both countries, it was sufficient to simply obtain a permit at the respective consulates.

On July 4, 2016 Warsaw suspended the agreement on the visa-free local border traffic, referring to the NATO summit obligations. Moscow responded with the abolition of visa-free arrangement in respect to the citizens of Poland.
