Western countries close their eyes to real chemical terrorism in Syria, Iraq - Zakharova

According to the official spokeswoman of Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, a number of Western countries continue to close their eyes to numerous incidents of militants’ using chemical weapons in Syria.

“Numerous cases of militants using chemical weapons which, even according to Western media, has become a ‘common practice among terrorists in their defense of Mosul,’ blatantly demonstrate the extent of the problem of ‘chemical terrorism’ in the Middle East,” Zakharova believes.

Yet, in the diplomat’s opinion, such a situation reflects the West’s policy of double standards “in favor of some geopolitical ambitions.”

At the same time, according to Zakharova, Russia has for three years unsuccessfully tried to draw public attention to “the endless recurrence of chemical terrorism in Syria and Iraq.”

“At various international venues, first and foremost in the UN Security council and Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, we have repeatedly urged our partners to join efforts to counter chemical terrorism. However, all of our efforts have either been left without the support of our colleagues from Western countries or are openly blocked by them,” the foreign ministry’s spokeswoman concluded.
