More than 80% of Russian citizens call the US’ missile strike on the Shayrat airbase in Homs on the night of April 7th a "provocation" designed to destabilize the situation in Syria. This is the data of the latest survey conducted by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center.
According to the survey’s data, only 6% of respondents called that Pentagon’s actions a response to the alleged use of chemical weapons by Bashar al-Assad’s troops, which only 4% of Russians believe. 14% of Russians answered that the Russian Federation should remain neutral and not take any action in connection with the US’ missile attack. Meanwhile, 11% of respondents believe that the situation should be carefully investigated. Another 11% believe that it is necessary to support the Syrian government.
Still 6% of respondents suggested that negotiations should be held in this situation, while 3% called on Russia “not to yield to provocations” and 2% believe that Russia should “react toughly.”
In addition, more than half of Russians (53%) expressed support for continuing the Russian Federation’s Air Force operation in Syria. A third of respondents, or 34%, oppose the operation. Last year, according to sociological research, 58% of Russians were for continuing the operation in Syria while 25% were against.
The survey was conducted on April 11th-12th among 1,200 respondents over telephone. Statistical error does not exceed 3.5%.
