Chairman of the Russian Federation Council, Valentina Matviyenko, said that Moscow strongly opposes the use of chemical weapons, but insists on an independent investigation into the alleged use of chemical weapons in Khan Sheikhoun, Idleb, stressing the need to inspect the affected area and punish those responsible.
"Russia categorically rejects the use of chemical weapons. However, before any party gets accused, it is necessary to conduct a prompt and thorough investigation with the participation of the OPCW and independent experts from various United Nations memberstates. Only this will allow to discover the reality of the events and eventually determine those responsible so they can be brought to justice", Matviyenko was heard saying after meeting the Speaker of the Saudi Shura Council, Sheikh dr. Abdullah bin Mohammad bin Ibrahim Al Sheikh in Riyadh.
She then pointed out that Moscow firmly rejects the repetition of the Iraqi scenario in Syria.
"We do not want any fabricated pretexts that could be used as an excuse for military intervention in Syria and other countries and we consider the US missile strike on Syria as a flagrant violation of the international law and an act of aggression against a sovereign country", she further added.
