The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Sergey Lavrov, questions the appropriateness of the head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, Alexander Turchynov, after his statement that the Ukrainian army must “advance on the East.”
Earlier, Turchynov proclaimed that Ukrainian troops in Donbass should “meter by meter, kilometer by kilometer, advance on the East,” but “most importantly, not overshoot the border.”
The Donetsk People’s Republic has emphasized that Turchynov is a Ukrainian official, and therefore his statement has been regarded as evidence that Kiev is violating the Minsk Agreements.
At a press conference, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said: “Constant doubt in the competence of Ukrainian politicians arose long ago. This is far from the first statement of its kind. Before Mr. Turchynov, the same threatening, warmongering rhetoric has been regularly used by President Poroshenko and Verkhovna Rada Speaker Parubiy, as well as other figures. This means that the Ukrainian side and the Ukrainian leadership do not want to fulfill the Minsk Agreements, even the part concerning the resolution of security problems. Allow me to remind you that Poroshenko has called security problems the main part of the Minsk Agreements and that he refused to discuss political processes as long as issues of security are not resolved.”
