A reduction in imports, as well as the August 2014 response to protect the domestic market, the so-called “food embargo”, contributed to the growth of domestic production.

In 2016, imports of food and agricultural raw materials decreased by 6.4% compared to those of 2015, amounting to $ 24.9 billion. Decreases affected the supply of fresh and frozen beef (17%), pork (15%), poultry (15.3%), fresh and frozen fish, fish fillets (10.6%), fresh fruits and vegetables (18.9%).

Exports amounted to $17 billion, which is 5.2% more than in 2015. Increases were predominantly in wheat delivery (19.3%), frozen fish (9%), sunflower oil 23.9%).

According to preliminary estimates, the level of food security (share of domestic agricultural products and foodstuffs in the total volume of commodity resources of the internal market) in 2016 amounted to: Grains and legumes - 99,2% (threshold set by the Doctrine of food security - 95%), potato - 97.4% (95%), sugar - 94.6% (80%) vegetable oil - 83.6% (80%), meat and meat products - 89.3% (85%), milk and dairy products - 79.8% (90%).

Meanwhile, President Putin has stated that the embargo will last as long as Western sanctions do.

"I assume that the sanctions will not last forever. And if they will last forever, we will restrict access to our market for the products that we produce ourselves, "- said Putin, speaking at the IV Media Forum" All-Russia People's Front "(ONF) in St. Petersburg on Monday.

"We took advantage of these sanctions in the long run in order to strike back. And so it did not harm us, but only helped. It obviously helped us.” - said the President.

He noted that sanctions are harmful to Europe and the US, they reduce the competitiveness of the economy, resulting in the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs. According to Putin, Western sanctions violate the principles of the functioning of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and international regulations in this area.
