Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Foreign Affairs Minister of Turkey, has been denied entry to the Netherlands, after he wanted to attend a pro-Turkish rally in Rotterdam.

According to the statement from a spokesperson for the Dutch government, the move was taken due to “risks to public order and state security”, caused by the proposed visit of Mevlut Cavusoglu to Rotterdam on Saturday.
The statement further added that the Netherlands and Turkey could search for “an acceptable solution”, however, it seems Ankara is not respecting the rules related to the public gatherings.

It is not known whether the decision from the Dutch government is related to the incident that happened at the pro-Erdogan rally in the German city of Hamburg on Tuesday, during which a German journalist was beaten by Turkish security personnel. This, was, however, not the only controversy surrounding the event.  Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu held a speech during which he displayed far-right extremist and islamist gestures. It was later revealed that the audience which Çavuşoğlu was addressing, consisted predominantly of the Grey Wolves, a Turkish far-right islamo-nationalist group, also aligned with the terrorists groups in Syria. The authorities in Hamburg have since looked into the matter due to the possible violations of the German constitution.
The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has since responded to the decision made by the Dutch government by comparing it to Nazis, during one of his rallies in Istanbul.Çavuşoğlu said he would visit Rotterdam regardless and accused the Dutch government of deliberately taking Turkish citizens as hostages by banning them from attending the pro-Turkish rallies.
He even want as far as to say that the Netherlands could face harsh economic and political sanctions.

Turkey has a relatively large diaspora in Netherlands. It comes in third right after the Turkish diaspora communities in Germany and France.
