Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Mikhail Bogdanov, confirmed to the RIA Novosti press agency that representatives of the Syrian government will attend the upcoming peace talks in Geneva.
Bogdanov said that Moscow hopes that the armed branch of the Syrian opposition will also attend the peace talks. He also said that Staffan de Mistura, the UN special envoy to Syria, will visit Moscow before the Geneva talks.
On Sunday, the Russian news agency Sputnik reported that de Mistura requested to visit Damascus, but the Syrian authorities allegedly turned his request down, without any reasons specified, according to an anonymous source.
Through his mediation, de Mistura is trying to reach a political solution between the Syrian parties in conflict and intends to participate in the upcoming Geneva talks on settlement of the Syrian crisis that will begin on March 23rd.
