Moscow believe’s Kiev’s course towards completely banning the Russian language and forced Ukrainianization to be linguistic genocide. This was stated by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affair’s official spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova.
“I would like to comment on Kiev’s intention to legislatively consolidate forced Ukrainianization in all spheres of life in Ukraine…The official authorities are continuing the course of totally de-Russifying and forcibly Ukrainianizing the country. Following absolutely odious laws that have deprived the Russian-speaking population in Ukraine of the right to receive objective information in their native language, the Kiev authorities intend to actually legislate a ban on the Russian language itself,” Zakharova said at a briefing in Moscow.
“In essence, linguistic genocide is being pursued at the state level in the country,” Zakharova emphasized.
In Zakharova’s words, “a bill has been introduced to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on state language which provides for the mandatory use of the Ukrainian language in all areas of everyday life without exception.” According to this law, attempts to institute official multilingualism in the country will be equated to attempting to overthrow the state and will be subject to criminal liability, Zakharova added.
Concluding, the Russian diplomat said: “The approval of these documents means actually legalizing the forced Ukrainianization of the country and institutionalizing struggle not only against the Russian language and culture, but the languages of other ethnic groups inhabiting Ukraine. Such legislation is none other than a tool for restricting rights and suppressing dissent.”
