Former Russian State Duma deputy Denis Voronenkov has been murdered in Kiev. He was shot in the center of the Ukrainian capital.

In Kiev, a former State Duma deputy Denis Voronenkov was killed, the Ukrainian edition of Vesti reported, referring to Verkhovna Rada deputy Vadim Rabinovich.

Information was confirmed by RBC from the press service of the police in Kiev. "Yes, we confirm the information. One dead, two wounded, they were sent to the hospital. The murder occurred at 11:30 at the crossroads of Taras Shevchenko and Pushkinskaya streets," the ministry said. The police confirmed that the murdered man was Voronenkov. According to Vesti, the killer is one of the wounded.

RBC obtained further confirmation of the murder from Ilya Ponomarev, another former State Duma deputy who also emigrated to Ukraine. In his Facebook page he said that the deceased was on his way to meeting him. When asked about who would be behind the crime, Ponomarev said "obviously everyone."

According to Vesti-Ukraina, the shooting began after Voronenkov left the Premier Palace Hotel with a bodyguard. The bodyguard defended the former deputy from the shooter, who was lying in wait for them. As a result, both the bodyguard and the killer were injured. Both have been hospitalized.

Denis Voronenkov is a former State Duma deputy from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation. He left for Ukraine in October 2016, after losing in the September elections to the State Duma.

In late January it became known that he gave testimony in Kiev against former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych in the treason trial.

Attorney General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko said that he spoke about Yanukovych's letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which Yanukovich asked for "bringing troops to Ukraine" after the events on the Independence Square in 2014.

In mid-February, Voronenkov in an interview compared Russia with Nazi Germany and called the reuniting of Crimea annexation.

On March 3, the Moscow Basmanniy Court indicted Voronenkov on charges of fraud and falsification of documents. Soon he was placed on the international wanted list. According to the investigation, in 2010-2011, Voronenkov, and other persons, illegally re-registered and sold a building that belonged to the confectionery firm "Toma." According to the inictment, as a result of the fraud, he received about $ 1.2 million, i.e, 6.4 million rubles.
