A meeting between the French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen and Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian, Lebanon’s Grand Mufti, is canceled after Le Pen refused to veil her head with a headscarf.
According to the statement, coming from the information office of Dar Al Fatwa, Lebanon’s main Sunni Muslim authority, “the French presidential candidate of the right-wing party Front National in the upcoming elections, Marine Le Pen, refused to veil her head with a headscarf, which is mandatory when visiting Lebanese Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian.”
The information office has allegedly informed Le Pen about the protocol through one of her assistants.
The statement from Dar Al Fatwa’s Information Office also read that “the people in charge of the meeting were rather surprised with this kind of behaviour and it is regrettable that the meeting did not take place.”
The French presidential candidate is since Sunday visiting Lebanon and has since met with Lebanon’s most prominent officials with whom she, among other things, tried to focus on the growing threat of Islamic terrorism.
