The operation on withdrawing militants and their families from Aleppo has opened new opportunities for a ceasefire in other areas of Syria. This was stated on Sunday by the official spokesperson of the Ministry of Defense of Russia, Major General Igor Konashenkov.
On Friday, the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria announced the completion of its operation of liberating Aleppo from militants, who have controlled the eastern part of the city since 2012.
Konashenkov noted that “we are dealing first and foremost with really separating militants and the so-called ‘moderate opposition’ from uncompromising rebels, which was made possible thanks to the efforts of Russian officers from the Center for Reconciliation. They did what our American partners considered impossible to realize in practice the entire year.”
“The operation of the Russian Center for Reconciliation has shown that what is necessary for moving forward for reconciliation in Syria is the desire to negotiate with all parties of the conflict directly ‘on the ground’, with the exception of terrorist groups,” Konashenkov stated.
Continuing, Konashenkov said that “all attempts to replace tough negotiation work with the armed opposition on the ground with some kind of conferences in comfortable Western capitals and representatives of ‘higher negotiating committees’ or sending some kind of ‘observers’ to Aleppo is a dead-end and useless path. The sooner they realize this in Paris, London, and Washington, who for now are incapable of even sending humanitarian aid to Syria, the sooner there will be peace.”
