The official representative of the Russian Defense Ministry, Major-General Igor Konashenkov, said the Bellingcat group does not hesitate in "shameless lies and distortions," in saying that the Russian military was allegedly present in the Donbass.

"Since the non-random occurrence in the UK of bloggers of the so-called investigations of Bellingcat,  we have repeatedly pointed out that this is nothing more than a clearinghouse publishing anti-Russian Western promotional materials. There was no exception in the last release from them, regarding the departmental awards of the Russian Defense Ministry, about which they published allegedly new "evidence" of the participation of Russian troops in the fighting in Ukraine on the basis of disparate images in social networks, honorary signs and numerous awards from the Russian military ", he said in a statement on the page 'Konashenkova', of the Russian Defense Ministry on Facebook.

The Defense Ministry spokesman also said that the increase in the number of Russian awards given, as reported in the Bellingcat document, is due to the amount of drills, which are frequent lately.

"In this regard, the relative increase in the number of serviceman awards in the years 2014-2016 is due to the fact of the increased number of unannounced inspections of combat readiness of troops and other combat training in the army and navy. In addition, a significant number of our soldiers were recognized for their work in the implementation of security measures (of combat duty) for the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, as well as carrying out counter-terrorist operations in the North Caucasus region ",  said Konashenkov.

Previously, in Forbes, citing data from Bellingcat, combat medals issued to members of the Armed Forces in 2014-2015, claimed that the military was awarded for participation in combat operations in the Donbass.

Note, the official position of the Russian Federation has repeatedly stressed that Russia is not a party to the conflict in the Donbass.
