Ukraine, adrift like The Raft of the Medusa

After being mired in muddy excuses for the tragic events that took place in Crimea, each one muddier than the last, from outright denial, to the delusions abput the kidnapping of a simple truck driver, the Ukrainian authorities have decided to play the "it is not us it is the radicals' card (what these radical nationalists don't get up to, from the Maidan revolution that they led, to the massacres in the Donbass -- and now they are used as a scapegoat for the government of Ukraine).

Thus, the Kommersant newspaper reported the words of a source in the Ukrainian security forces, which recognized the attempted diversion, but persisted in the claim that Kiev authorities had nothing to do with it:

"... The Russians will have to show their evidence to Western inquirers when they ask for them. Our line of defense will probably be as follows: radical patriots decided to become famous at their own risk, by performing "exploits" in Crimea. The Ukrainian state has nothing to do with their amateur act"

Previously, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow has indisputable evidence of the preparation of attacks in the Crimea. According to the minister, Russia is ready to provide the Western partners additional information.

So if you listen to the Ukrainian authorities they are willing, in order to wash their hands of this case, to say openly that they neither control the country nor their armed forces.

    One is left speechless.

I must say that before the latest blunder committed by the so-called Ukrainian Armed Forces, there is indeed something to ask about the stability of a Ukrainian government that seems to have nothing of government but the name.

Despite repeated notifications from the command of the People's Republic of Donetsk (the last dating from yesterday afternoon), about the deplorable stockpiling of ammunition by the Ukrainian army in large numbers near the front line, and what's more in civilian areas (endangering the surrounding population), the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) is keeping it up, amassing still more ammunition -- certainly with a veiw to a future offensive. And without the international observers saying anything, though they have been put on notice.

The result was not expected, and following a violation of safety rules causing the explosion of munitions, the whole ammunition warehouse in the Zaïtsevo area occupied by the Ukrainian army (north of Gorlovka) exploded, completely destroying the warehouse. As the storage area was located in the middle of a residential area, it is likely that there are casualties among the civilians living nearby.

And if the Ukrainian government controls neither the radicals nor the army, it turns out they also controls less its media. So the Ukrainian journal European Pravda called on the European Union not to allow a visa-free regime for Ukraine, denouncing the related Ukrainian legislation as merely a smokescreen, a false front merely put forward to deceive.

In this context, we understand why, after multiple bombings of their observation posts, observers of the Joint Center on Control and Coordination of the ceasefire turned to the authorities of the People's Republic of Donetsk for their safety, rather than asking Kiev to stop bombing their positions.

The Ukrainian Raft of the Medusa Ukraine is adrift, but it is burdened with explosives ready to go off at any shore it has the misfortune to bump into.
