As a total, Russia placed 4th at the previous summer Olympics (2012) in London, and 4th this year in Rio. It seems that no matter what they do – the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) or as Putin called it - the "Office ghost", one who doesn't actually have a purpose - has failed to force a humiliating result on the Russian team, as part of their politicised, dirty games. In light of this, they must have thought “How else can we upset the Russian team? Let’s pick on the disabled people!” This seems to literally be WADA’s thought process, as Russia's Paralympians have been blanket-banned from attendance.
On 26 August 2016, at a special ceremony in the Kremlin, Putin awarded all the Rio medalists with government honours, prize money as well as BMW vehicles. Athletes thanked the government, and for the opportunity to train in their sport of choice. In the West, it can be very expensive to put a child through sports lessons, especially at a semi-professional level. While private coaching exists in Russia, there are also widely accessible state-funded sports clubs for kids of all socio-economic backgrounds.
This clip also demonstrates the unified stance of the multiethnic Russian state toward the governing structures. One of the wrestlers, who is likely from a Caucasus region of Russia (where they speak their local tongue) can be seen practicing his speech through-out the ceremony, only to forget what he practiced when he got up to speak. It happens!
