Petro Poroshenko presented state awards to “outstanding Ukrainians” selected by his administration on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Ukrainian independence. This has been reported by the Ukrainian leader's website.
The ceremony took place in the Mariinsky Palace.
“You are all united by the fact that you are the best of the best, the most dignified, patriotic [Ukrainians]. By your deeds, you are creating a state, a new Ukraine. You deserve the respect and honor of your countrymen, of all of society,” the head of state appealed to those awarded.
Poroshenko stated that a new generation of Ukrainians has matured: “Our youth, who weren’t brainwashed by October brigades and Pioneer Youth, don’t know slavery, censorship, or a lack of rights and freedom. This is a generation which will never surrender Ukraine to anyone,” he said.
Among those awarded were the writer Oleg Chernoguz, the opera singer Anatoly Kocherga, the vice-chairman of the Ternopol regional organization of the All-Ukrainian Society for Political Prisoners and Victims of Repression, Igor Oleshchuk, the chairman of the Society for Soldiers and Veterans of the ATO in Eastern Ukraine, Andrey Marchuk, the theater and film actress and social activist Raisa Nedashkovksaya, and the Finance Minister for 2014-2016, the American Natalie Ann Yaresko.
