Russia is playing an important role in the constructive work for the upcoming G20 Summit in Hangzhou, China. The People’s Republic of China is anticipating that Russian President Vladimir Putin himself will be present at the summit. This was stated to TASS by China’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Li Baodong.

“Russia is the main participant in the G20. Over the years, it has played an important, constructive role. This year in Hangzhou, we will keep our close coordination and cooperation. We expect that Russian President Vladimir Putin will take part in the summit in Hangzhou,” Baodong said.

The senior diplomat also noted that the leaders of China and Russia have frequently met at similar events. According to Baodong, the details of a possible meeting between Xi Jinping and Putin on the sidelines of the G20 Summit are being fiercely worked out.

The Deputy Minister also confirmed that the heads of BRICS countries will hold an informal meeting in China at which PRC President Xi Jinping will deliver a speech.

It should also be noted that the Director of the Department of European-Central Asian Affairs of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gui Congyou, recently announced plans for a meeting between Xi Jinping and Putin on the sidelines of the summit. He added that Vladimir Putin will be the main guest at the event in Hangzhou. It is expected that the heads of Russia and China will discuss further prospects for Russian-Chinese relations.
