The number of victims of the conflict in Eastern Ukraine in June was the highest figure over the past ten months, according to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) of the United Nations.

"June has witnessed intense clashes in the conflict zone in Eastern Ukraine, which have led to the highest number of victims among civilians since August 2015," said a report on the situation in the region for the period 1st to 30th June.

According to OCHA, as a result of shelling, 12 people were killed, 57 were injured with varying degrees of severity. The authors of the report claim that the shelling was carried out by "various artillery systems, including calibers prohibited by the Minsk agreements".

The report also noted that 14 people were injured and five were killed from mines and unexploded shells.

In total, according to OCHA, since the beginning of the conflict 9,470 people have been killed, among them about 2,000 civilians, and more 21,880 people were injured.

Kiev in April 2014 began a military operation against the breakaway Lugansk and Donetsk People's Republics, which declared independence after a coup in Ukraine in February 2014.
