Kremlin Awards for Russia Day, 2016 (VIDEO)

Translated by Inessa Sinchougova for Fort Russ
    13th June, 2016

June 12th is Russia Day is the national holiday of the Russian Federation. It has been celebrated annually since 1992. It commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) on June 12, 1990 and continues to be an important day for Russia's modern day nation-building.

Each year, Vladimir Putin and senior Russian officials take the time to personally acknowledge individuals who excel in various categories of Russian society; the arts, music and dance, medicine, engineering and the sciences.

The entire ceremony is over an hour long, with each laureate addressing the assembly hall. I have selected just one speech for this clip, that of Valery Gergiev.

Gergiev is a world renowned conductor and opera company director. He is General Director of the Mariinsky Theatre, the Principal Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, as well as Artistic Director of the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg. Most recently, Gergiev was in the spotlight for conducting the symphony orchestra concert in the ruins of Palmyra, Syria.

As the last laureate to speak, Gergiev's address was the perfect mix of the personal, the professional, and the political.
