The losses which German businesses have incurred as a result of sanctions introduced against Russia and Moscow’s retaliatory measures are the “price of democracy.” This was stated in an interview with the magazine Spiegel by the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Vladimir Groysman.

“To me it’s clear that the German economy is suffering from sanctions. But this is the price of democracy, freedom, and European values,” the Ukrainian prime minister noted, adding that he is against any easing of sanction pressure on Russia.

Groysman emphasized that “Ukrainians are now defending not only their own sovereignty, but the eastern borders of Europe.” The head of the government also praised the current German leadership for Berlin’s position on Ukraine.

Kiev “highly appreciates Germany’s support and the personal efforts of Angela Merkel in resolving many complex issues,” Groysman stated. When asked about Ukraine’s failures in carrying out the reforms expected by the West, the prime minister explained the reason for this as “decades-old rampant corruption in the country.”
