Donbass is marking the second anniversary of the referendum on the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics. On May 11th, 2014, local residents almost unanimously voted for sovereignty at the polls.

In Donetsk, tens of thousands of people marched in a procession, whose convoy included delegations from all the cities and districts of the DPR, and who all celebrated that they had made the correct choice back in May, 2014. The war unleashed by Kiev and the economic blockade have united residents and taught them to enjoy the small things in life.

In the Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR), the celebration takes place today, May 12th, since the results of the referendum in Luhansk were announced on May 12th, 2014 after the conclusion of the referendum in Donetsk. On the eve, youth organized a flashmob which formed an enormous, living tricolor of the LPR flag, which is dark blue, light blue, and red.

The referendum was held in spring  2014 when Kiev launched the military operation against Donbass, which refused to recognize the coup in Kiev. Moscow commented that it would “respect the self-expressed will” of Donbass residents, while Kiev and the West did not recognize the results of the referendum.

Donbass is now turning to normal life and rebuilding destroyed houses. A number of economic, social, and military tasks remain. The future of Donbass is now being discussed in Donetsk, in forum on which have participated a group of European politicians and experts from France, Germany, Italy, and Greece. A  deputy of the European Parliament from France, Jean-Luc Schaffhauser said: “Kiev does not need a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Donbass. We should assemble a peace coalition for the diplomatic resolution of the conflict.”
