UN Receives 69 Complaints of Rape by Peacekeepers

    5th March, 2016

In 2015, the UN received 69 complaints of sexual exploitation and rape by its peacekeepers on missions in ten different countries. The greatest number of claims was submitted for peacekeepers serving in the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The UN has already completed investigations into seventeen of the cases, ten of them were found groundless, reports TASS. Claims in other cases continue to be verified.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for guilty peacekeepers to be court-martialled and expelled to their country of origin, with the introduction of their DNA samples to a special databank. It is also recommended to withhold part of the "blue helmets' " wages and transfer it to the trust fund for victims of sexual exploitation.

Allegations of sex crimes by peacekeepers in the UN occur with alarming frequency. Last month the UN mission in the Central African Republic announced that they had identified seven new potential victims of the "blue helmets". One of them is 13 and she is pregnant.
