The Russian air force continues to launch airstrikes on the positions of militants in Syria. Currently, the planes of the air and space forces conduct 20-25 sorties per day to support government troops who are leading the fight for Palmyra. This was stated at a briefing by head of the main operational directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces Sergei Rudskoy. The text of his speech was obtained by "Lenta".

"We have created the conditions for the encirclement and defeat of the armed forces of ISIS," — said Rudskoy. He also noted that the Russian military is involved in the delivery of humanitarian assistance to a number of settlements of Syria. "The Russian Center for reconciliation of the parties delivered a hundred tons of humanitarian aid to over a hundred settlements: food, drinking water, basic necessities, and medicines. Moreover, medical professionals were sent to villages to provide medical care for people who haven't had any for years" — said the representative of the General Staff.

On Monday 17th March, President of Russia Vladimir Putin, at a meeting with the military, appreciated the excellent execution by the aerospace forces in combat missions in Syria.

Russia deployed a group of aircraft and supporting subdivisions in the fall of 2015 at the request of the government in Damascus. From 30th September, Russian planes began to strike radical Islamist groups, including "Islamic State" and "Jabhat al-Nusra", supporting the Syrian government troops. On March 14th, 2016, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would begin the withdrawal of the main part of the military contingent from Syria. He noted that the locations of the Russian forces (in Tartous port and Hmeymim airbase) will function as normal.
