UN Security Council Adopts Resolution Affirming Ceasefire in Syria

Translated by Ollie Richardson for Fort Russ
    26th February, 2016

The UN Security Council adopted a resolution in support of a cease-fire in Syria less than an hour before its entry into force on the territory of the country. All 15 members of the UN Security Council voted 'FOR' the document during the vote.

Prepared by Russia and the United States, the draft resolution was circulated the night before. The document supports the joint statement of the Russian Federation and the US on Syria on February 22nd, and sets the start of the ceasefire from midnight on February 27th (Damascus time, 01.00 Moscow time).

A meeting of the UN Security Council on the eve of the cease-fire's entry into force began 45 minutes later than planned. According to diplomats of some countries-members of the UN Security Council, the text of the document was amended at the last moment by its sponsors.

The document notes that "The Syrian government forces and their supporters reported to the Russian Federation, and Syrian opposition groups told  Russia and the United States that they have adopted and are committed to the terms of the cessation of hostilities and are now parties to it".

The draft resolution requires all parties, "subject to the ceasefire, to comply with the obligations" and urges the members of the international Syria support group "to use its influence on parties to ensure the implementation of ceasefire".
