Merkel Unable to Explain Why Anti-Russian Sanctions Were Extended

    2nd February, 2016

Germany has decided to prolong the anti-Russian sanctions. This was stated by German Chancellor Angela Merkel at a joint press conference with President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.

According to Merkel, Russia did not sufficiently comply with the Minsk agreements on the Ukrainian settlement. What she meant by this has not been explained. But Russia is not a party to the conflict in Donbass, so no action was promised, and, consequently, cannot be blamed for the failure of something.

It is possible that, with the help of this rhetoric, the German Chancellor is just trying to gain more popular support. Today, the ratings of Merkel's ruling CDU party have already dropped to 32% - and are still falling. If this goes on - Merkel will have no chance of winning parliamentary elections in a year and a half, and a third time to head the Cabinet of Ministers of Germany. She said she plans to take the post of Chancellor once again.
