Latvia Stages Rally Against BBC Propaganda

    26th February, 2016

A protest was held in Riga against the airing of the Latvian public television documentary by the  British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) about the beginning of a third world war with Russia. The protesters called the documentary false and provocative. The event was organized by the party "Russian Union of Latvia". People were holding posters with the slogans "War hysteria - not at our expense", "War Propaganda - not at our expense," "Stop the BBC in Latvia!". The participants chanted "Shame on the BBC" and "Shame on the government".

Latvian public television is financed from the state budget of the country. At the expense of the taxpayers it acquired the right to show the BBC documentary. The plot of the documentary is built around the escalation of international conflict, allegedly caused by a military invasion of NATO members Latvia and Estonia by Russia.

Earlier, the President's Press Secretary, Dmitry Peskov, said that the Kremlin did not watch the BBC documentary about a hypothetical conflict between NATO and Russia:

"It is a pity to waste time on "cheap stuff" - said Peskov.

"We are against the screening of Latvian films made by our enemies and propagandists, that show us and the Russian community of the country in a false light, featuring Daugavpils and Latgale. This BBC film completely has no connection with reality. Today we ask that Latvian taxpayer money is not used to incite hatred between different communities in the country. Let NATO pay for such false films, we don't need this movie!" - stated the co-Chairman of the Board of "Russian Union of Latvia" Miroslav Mitrofanov.

Participants in the rally were not just Russian-speaking residents of Latvia, but Latvians too.

"This movie creates a syndrome of fear and hatred, with our money on state television, said the Latvian social and political activist Edvīns Puķe.
