The goals that Moscow is pursuing in Syria do not pose a threat to the West but, on the contrary, they coincide with their interests, according to the specialist in international relations Roland Lombardi in an interview with the newspaper Atlantico.
"You have to be an idiot or blind not to notice that when Russia defends its interests in the Middle East, it simultaneously protects the interests of Europe and France," — said Lombardi.
According to the analyst, the only threat to the world community comes from Turkey and Saudi Arabia, which the West consider allies. At the moment their double game with terrorist and Islamist groups, and their desire to bring the Salafis and "Muslim Brotherhood" to power in all the Arab States on the wave of the "Arab spring" has become apparent.
Saudi Arabia and especially Turkey are increasingly isolated and have lost a lot, says Lombardi. In a panic attack, Ankara, with the support of Riyadh, rashly threatens intervention in Syria, and its purpose is not ISIS, but the rescue of their proteges and to attack the Kurds, who are a valuable ally for the West in the fight against terrorists.
"He (Erdogan – ed.) is counting on escalation and error on the part of Russia to refer to article number five, which would oblige NATO to come to his aid. But it turned into a disaster. You should expect new provocations, such as the Russian bomber downed last year, "he said.
In this regard, Roland Lombardi expressed the hope that Moscow will once again show their composure and not fall into Erdogan's trap, and the U.S. will be able to affect their "ally" and make them behave. Since it is the end of the presidential term of Barack Obama, in less than a year, he did not need an open conflict with Russia for the sake of the Turks and the Saudis, said the interlocutor of the newspaper.
The analyst believes the solution suggested by Russia in Syria is the most serious, rational and in the best interests of all. The Kremlin has already secured the support of Iran, China, Egypt, Jordan, the UAE and even Israel, and they guided the Kurds, and even the US to gradually reconsider their position regarding the settlement of the conflict, notes Lombardi.
