Commenting on the meeting between Russian presidential aide Vladislav Surkov and Deputy Secretary of state Victoria Nuland, the state Department coordinator of U.S. sanctions, Daniel Fried, expressed his point of view that the restrictive measures allegedly helped Washington to bring Moscow to the negotiating table.

In this regard, Fried came to the conclusion that sanctions against Russia will be cancelled immediately after the fulfilment of the Minsk agreements, when "there will be elections in the Donbass, the fighting has stopped and the Eastern border of Ukraine is restored".

According to the columnist of MIA "Russia today", Rostislav Ishchenko, the Americans for a long time refused to believe that the Minsk process is an effective mechanism because they were not allowed to admit it.

"But now, they recognized that this is the only way to solve the problem. Another possibility to achieve stabilization in Ukraine does not exist. Therefore the US authorities put pressure on Kiev, forcing them to implement the agreements",  the expert said in an interview with "SP".
