A statue of Mao Zedong, erected in China's Henan province on January 5, was demolished three days after the installation, reports the BBC with reference to the newspaper People's Daily.

The newspaper reported a local official who said the project was not agreed with the authorities. The statue reaches a height of 37 meters and is entirely gold plated. Its cost is estimated in 3 million yuan, which was collected by joint efforts of local residents and entrepreneurs.

Users of Chinese social networks, however, are not worried about the toppling of the statue, complaining about the waste of authorities' time and the choice of location for the monument: in the 1950s, Henan province suffered severely from famine resulting from the policies of the Chinese authorities.
