Israel and Turkey have reached a preliminary agreement on the normalization of relations, including the return of ambassadors from both countries, Reuters reported with reference to the representative of the Israeli authorities.

Israel and Turkey in the past have been strategic partners, but became distanced to one other on the background of the reorientation of Turkish foreign policy towards European integration to strengthen its position in the Arab-Muslim world. The peak of mutual alienation was the interception incident in 2010 with the "Freedom Flotilla", where Israeli commando ships headed to break the blockade of Gaza, which resulted in the deaths of nine Turkish citizens/participants of the voyage.

According to the interlocutor of the Agency, the agreement on a diplomatic détente was reached at a meeting in Switzerland. He noted that under the agreement Israel will create a fund to compensate the families of the victims.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan previously called for the normalization of relations of his country with Israel, subject to certain conditions, including the payment of compensation.
