Sevmash General Director Mikhail Budnichenko said in an interview with RIA Novosti that the cruiser Admiral Nakhimov will return to active service in 2018, a year ahead of schedule.

Q: Sevmash is renovating the Admiral Nakhimov, one of the three Soviet Kirov-class nuclear missile cruisers. Could you tell us about the work your shipyard is performing?

A: We are testing and removing parts of the hull, we've completed the repairs in the first and second compartments. We are also working on optimizing the time allocated for electrical work. Our task for next year is to form main hull structures, foundations, bulkheads, install large-dimension equipment, and to install the electrical system.

Q: The Navy Chef of Staff challenged Sevmash to return Admiral Nakhimov to service in 2018. Will you manage?

A: Right now everything is on schedule. In addition to Sevmash, over one hundred Russian organizations and enterprises are participating in the reconstruction. We've created an interagency working group to identify and solve problems that arise during the reconstruction. Therefore everything is being monitored. Which means we have the ability to observe the progress and, if need be, accelerate it.

J.Hawk's Comment: What Sevmash director left out of his interview is what the final product is going to look like. Because by all accounts it's not only a matter of bringing the Nakhimov back to life, so to speak, but transforming it into a very different ship from what was originally commissioned. The reconstructed Nakhimov will carry all the latest naval weapon systems currently in service or in testing, including the Club/Kalibr family, the Oniks/Yakhont, as well as the naval version of the S-500 plus of course an upgraded short-range air defense system and anti-submarine weapons.  That will quite literally make it both the largest and the most heavily armed surface ship in the world, other than aircraft carriers.
